Women’s History Month started as a national celebration in 1981 when the U.S. Congress passed a public law that requested and authorized the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982, as “Women’s History Week.” Then between 1988 and 1994, the President proclaimed March of each year as “Women’s History Month.”

Since 1995, a series of annual proclamations celebrate women’s contributions to the country and recognize their achievements in different fields made over the course of American history. On the same note, March 8 is declared as International Women’s Day, celebrating women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements.
