Here is what you will need to start off with:
-Plastic Poke Punch
A poke punch is a tool that is like a soldering pen that can poke holes using a heated tip. It will be needed to create holes at the bottom of your containers to create drainage holes. These are necessary for plants to prevent their bottom roots from sitting in water and rotting.
1. Using a poke punch, poke several holes at the bottom of one of the hinged containers. You want to make sure you space the holes equally allowing for equal drainage opportunity for the soil, but also not too many to the point where water escapes entirely, making it impossible for the soil to stay moist.
2. Remove the flowers (we are using Petunias) from your pot and plant them into the container. If the root ball is too tight, you can gently loosen it with a hand rake to help the roots spread out.
3. Add potting soil, enough to completely cover the roots of your plants. Do not use gardening soil, as potting soil contains more perlite; a type of white volcanic glass which provides better water retention*.
4. Using a waterproof marker, write a label on a bamboo paddle skewer. Stick it in the dirt where it is clearly visible. Carefully cut and remove the clear lid and place the potted container on top of it. You can now use the clear lid as a plant drip saucer!
*If you are planting seeds instead, you will want to start Step 3 and skip Step 2.
Now that you have completed these steps, here are some tips for a successful potted garden:
-Keep your containers in a well-lit area that receives bright light daily.
-Water regularly when the soil becomes dry.
-Routinely pull out weeds if you spot any in your pot, as they can overrun your plants.
-If you take care of them extra well, they can overfill their container! Feel free to transplant them into a larger container or directly outdoors once you feel like they have outgrown their current one.
In conclusion, gardening with LollicupStore can be a rewarding activity that beautifies your surroundings and supports the environment!
